Promotional mouse mats designed for traditional trackball style mice must be designed with a grippy surface capable of producing lots of traction in mind. This gripping surface is key to the performance of the promotional mouse mat, and similarly the acceptance of the mouse mat by an individual.
Like almost everything else in life, even if it is free there is no guarantee that someone will want to use your promotional mouse mats if it works poorly. In fact most people would rather spend the few dollars to get a good mouse mat that works well then use a free promotional mouse mat that works poorly. Keep this in mind when designing the mouse mats, and when figuring out the budget for the product. If you cannot afford to produce promotional mouse mats that work well then perhaps you should choose a different type of promotional object.
Traditionally, and almost exclusively, promotional mouse mats designed for trackball style mice have been made out of the material called neoprene, or a similar rubberized material that possesses many of the same characteristics. Fortunately this material is inexpensive, and easily manipulated so it makes the ideal material choice for your promotional mouse mat. As the saying goes, if it isn't broke why fix it. Or to put it in other terms, why spend 10 times as much to finish the surface of a metal mouse mat when you can make a promotional mouse mat out of neoprene or rubber for a fraction of the cost.
Naturally because these are promotional mouse mats you are going to want to put your company's logo or some other graphic on the surface of the mouse mats, this is to be expected however you will need to take careful consideration to make sure that whatever printing style you choose does not adversely affect the performance of the promotional mouse mat in its ability to grip onto a trackball style mouse. Your designer will be able to help you here, as will your manufacturer, but some main tips to consider are these; avoid using appliquéd graphics that do not have the same surface texture as that of the neoprene or rubber.
For instance a vinyl appliqué on a promotional mouse mat would probably not be a good idea because the slick vinyl surface would provide very little traction for the trackball. There are however appliqués available in materials choices that provide a gripping ability similar to the neoprene that the promotional mouse mat is made out of.
You'll want to interface with both your designer and manufacturer when choosing this type of material, because not all manufacturers have all colors available, and your designer may or may not want to have input in this process to make sure that the necessary colors are available to manufacturer your promotional mouse mat. If this type of material is unavailable to you, and unique user traditional final appliqué, keep your logo small and your lines thin this way the performance of the promotional mouse mat will not be as hindered as it would be with a full-sized appliqué.
