Stop Facebook From Ruining Your Career (Before It’s Even Started)
Facebook Could Ruin My Career?!
A bold statement, I know, but don’t panic. You can take charge of your privacy right now, if you know where to look.
Whether you are a student, graduate or current employee, your Facebook privacy settings could probably do with a spring clean. Most people are aware of the settings, but don’t really take them seriously. In fact, only 15% of students think that what they post online will affect their future employability. However, let’s consider a few Facebook statistics
- 45% of employers check Facebook when considering potential employees
- 82% of colleges use Facebook to recruit new candidates
- 39% of employers check their employees Facebook profiles
Have you ever considered what your Facebook profile looks like to the public? There is an easy way to check: log onto your Facebook Timeline page and hit the little ‘cog’ dropdown box (under your cover photo, alongside “Activity Log”). If you select ‘View As’ you will see what information you are allowing anybody to access.
If you were shocked by what you saw, this may be because all your privacy settings were automatically removed when the Timeline featured was rolled out.

What Could You Explain on a 50p Coin? Introducing the ‘Minfographic’!
As I’m sure you may have heard, the Olympics are coming to London this year, and in amongst the furor of excitement, some really interesting merchandise and campaign ideas have been ‘coined’ (pardon the pun!). Numerous different souvenirs will be available in celebration of this memorable event, but my favourite so far has to be the depictions of all 29 of the sports competed in the games on the back of 50 pence pieces. In particular, I love the succinct explanation of the often over-complicated football offside rule which will feature on the back of one of these coins. This simplistic illustration of the rule that has confounded many an individual may very well save future generations from the confusion and distress we have long suffered during painful explanations of the rule.
This nifty little depiction got me thinking; visual explanations are often utlised to great effect as infographics, brilliant visual explanations or representations of statistics and so on. So perhaps in this microblogging world we live in with abbreviations being the order of the day (lol) have we outgrown the infographic, could this in fact be its future?! A ‘minfographic’ perhaps?! (mini + infographic, you with me?!) If this is the case, what else could be explained in this manner? Here are a few suggestions from our office: Read more…
The Future of the Advent Calendar?
Christmas begins on for me December the first. Once that first advent calendar door is opened I feel like I can slip into the festive season with ease, singing Christmas songs and mulling wine to my heart’s content. The advent calendar is my festive feeling trigger and has always been a big part of my Christmas celebrations, so as I opened the 16th window this morning to find my chocolate shaped sleigh (I know I am 23 but chocolate every morning? I’m not giving that up! ) I was also musing about the online advent calendars that have become a part of my daily routine this year. Informative, interesting or just plain entertaining, the amount of great online advent calendars seems to grow every year. I wanted to share with you a few of the best December treats of this year.
Will You Be Doing The Tangerine Tango?
Pantone have revealed that the hot colour for 2012 will be Tangerine Tango, a bright orange hue which is meant to inspire urgency and action, just what is needed in our rather fragile economic climate. So does this vibrant colour spell a bright future for 2012?
As avid users of the pantone system at IdeasByNet, we are following this trend with eager anticipation. Will we begin to see our clients looking to incorporate a tangerine twist to their marketing campaigns? Read more…
Ad Campaigns That Really Shouldn’t Work- But Do!
I have been thinking about this blog post for a little while, ever since the quintessentially British M1 accident in which a certain loved or loathed food stuff clogged up the traffic. It was not the accident that intrigued me but the wealth of tweets, headlines and status updates that appeared within hours focusing on the most famous ad campaign surrounding it, such as this one by @comedyfish:
“Marmite crash shuts M1. I love this story, I guess some will hate it though”
You either “love it or hate it”. What a slogan for an ad campaign! You would expect this to be marketing suicide, actually telling people that they might hate your product, but as a matter of fact this was a stroke of genius from their marketing team! Now so ingrained into our culture, people can be described as Marmite, many a dating site or interview will reference this as a question and Marmite has sold millions of units off the back of it!
After pondering this Marmite conundrum for a little while, I started to think of other advertising campaigns that also employ somewhat unorthodox tactics to promote their products with a surprising amount of success! Here are a few of my favourite bizarre TV adverts, enjoy!
Christmas Advert in Truth Shocker!
***WARNING UNDER EIGHTS, LOOK AWAY NOW!***
‘Who put an Xbox under the tree…?’ Littlewoods new advert for the festive season answers this question in a catchy (and in my opinion slightly annoying) song. However, the fact that ‘my lovely lovely mother’ is revealed as the person in question has caused outrage amongst some parents whose children still believe that Father Christmas shimmying down the chimney on Christmas Eve. It’s that time of the year again where everyone digs deep and has fun raising money for Children in Need! At IdeasByNet, we always get involved with this brilliant cause, this year donning various fancy dress costumes to raise money.
A competition ensued (of course, what would fancy dress be without a bit of banter!) and

Freddie Mercury’s epic ‘I Want to Break Free’ persona with ease. Read more…
